Our unit on Sharing the Planet revolves around the central idea:
"Learning about extinction can help us prevent the loss of the things we value."
The big idea we are exploring are divided into three lines of inquiry:
- what extinctions happened in the past
- natural and man-made causes of extinction
- understanding the impact of extinction in our lives
As the central idea is composed of challenging words, the whole class did a homework of finding out what EXTINCTION means, shared their understanding and came up with simpler terms to define the word.
- Extinction means "the end"
- Extinction means "gone forever"
- Extinction means "totally destroyed"
The learners took a closer look at the central idea and found more challenging words:
prevent
loss
value
The learners asked the help of the school community to unpack the unfamiliar words.
Afterwards, they shared their findings to the class and together we paraphrased the central idea. Now it is easier for grade 1 learners to understand.😊
