It's Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas

This week, we had the lighting of the Christmas tree. Prior to that, we prepared Christmas tree ornaments to decorate our school Christmas tree.

It was  a small Christmas tree but it is full of life brought by the colourful and creative ornaments made by DSKI students.

We also have the advent calendar that sill help us as we countdown to last day of school for this year.❤️

Show and Tell

This week, we had another round of interesting objects and items shared by the grade 1s to their classmates. They brought stuffed toys, books, showed experiments, and others.

The most interesting part of the Show and Tell is not just the listening to the presenter part but the question and answer portion.

All students show enthusiasm to ask questions to the presenter, and most of the questions target the personal connection of the presented to the object or item s/he brought.

Constellations

Here in Kobe, it is really unusual to see a clear night sky. It is almost all the time cloudy, or the brightness of the stars is overpowered by the brightness of the city lights.

It would have been a great experience to do stargazing so learners can appreciate the wonders of space. With stargazing, the learners can also have a chance of noticing the stars at night, looking for bright and big stars, checking for patterns (constellations), and others.

As stargazing is not always possible, Grade 1s decided to bring stargazing in the class by looking at some star patterns or constellations.

They watched videos about different constellations and created some patterns by poking holes at the bottom of the paper cups and projecting the 'constellations' on the wall using flashlight.

Show and Tell

This week, Grade 1s brought interesting items to school. They were so enthusiastic to share how they feel about the objects they brought. They entertained questions of their classmates. They were open to their feedback. Everyone is looking forward to have their turn.

Space Experts

Before Autumn break, the Grade 1s chose two topics that interest them the most and they committed to find information about those choices they made.

Last week and this week, they made either a poster or a booklet to share the information they gathered. They used the success criteria below in making their poster/booklet.

After making their posters/booklets, they shared their findings about their chosen celestial bodies to their classmates. They followed a pair-share routine. They were given 3 minutes to share their findings to their classmates. The posters are also posted in the classroom too.

Rotation and Revolution

Rotation vs Revolution

This is a very interesting topic that our Grade 1s explored this week. A lot of them came up with lots of other questions such as:

- If the Earth is moving, why can't we feel it?

- Why are we not falling off the Earth and to space?

- What happens if the Earth stop spinning?

- Does time also stop when the Earth stop turning?

Misconceptions were also cleared and corrected.

- The sun goes up and down the sky.

- The sun goes around the planets.

- The Earth is standing still.

Great minds, Grade 1s!

The Last Show and Tell

For our last day of Show and Tell, the students shared an object that they find interesting. They shared information about their favourite ...
