Local or International?

 Local or international?

This was the main focus of our unit for this week. Grade 1s guessed whether the products shown to them are from Japan or not.

They tried different ways of identifying products from Japan. The first thing they looked at is the wording. According to them, the language used on the label tells information about the origin of the product. As this is usually true, then a follow up question was raised to push them to think further.

"How about some products that show more than one language (characters) on the label, how would we know where they are from?"

The Grade 1s explored the label further and saw that some labels have the name and/or the flag of the country where it originated. MADE IN... and PRODUCT OF... explicitly show the origin of the product.

Another information came up although this is not always correct; the first numbers on the bar code also show the origin of the product. I this matter, if the first two digits on the bar code is 49, then it is a product of Japan.

Next, we looked into raw products such as fruits and vegetables. The Grade 1 learners were grouped into 4 and were asked to sort out the raw products into two groups again: from JAPAN and NOT from JAPAN.

This is what they came up with:

Next week, we will explore local raw materials from Japan and from different countries and how the movement of the products happen. We will zoom in to the journey of food from field to table. We are hoping to achieve understanding of importation as well.

How we organise ourselves

This week, we started by unpacking the word ORGANISE. It is really surprising that learners have different impressions and perspectives of the word.

Most of them equate organise to lining up properly. Some look at the word as putting things in a certain order such as shortest to tallest, biggest to smallest. Others think that grouping alike or similar things is being organised.

They might have different perspectives but they are all correct about it.

Let us see where our exploration will lead us when we return after the break.😊

* Here, grade 1s sorted out pictures to two groups: ORGANISED and NOT ORGANISED or messy. They explained afterwards the reason behind their choices.

* Here the Grade 1s did a carousel and wrote their idea about WHAT's in the FOOD?

Book and Culture Week

This week had been a very busy week for all community members. Teachers and parents prepared booths to showcase cultures around the world. There were even prepared games for the kids to play with and enjoy. All of the activities were engaging and fun. The whole school community loved the information sharing, the photo booths in and outside the school and of course, the dressing up (spirit week). 😍

Our biggest THANKS to the PTA and the Parent volunteers, who shared their most precious time and expertise to our students. We really appreciate it.❤️

The Grade 1s in their national attires

On the map you can see our places of origin.

We also had started our Maths lesson on money. To connect it to the week's event, we matched different currencies and flags of different countries.

KATANUKI was also shared by one student to the class. It is a Japanese game called die cutting. Everybody tried but no one successfully cut the die without breaking it.

The parents also prepared activities for the kids. The kids learned different games played here in Japan. They also learned about origami and haiku.

Dressing up in different characters is one of the most exciting parts.

Mr and Mrs Morineau (parents of Anton) shared their expertise on crepe-making. Everybody enjoyed seeing the fantastic crepe tossing and of course loved the best part which is, eating the crepe. 😋 YUM!

Exhibit: Inventions that Changed the World

The Grade 1s did a lot of hard work to look for information about the invention of their choice and to come up with a model of it.

They displayed their hard work in the hallway for other community members to see. The main reason for the exhibit is for them to share what they know and learned from this unit to the rest of the school.

The next one they are working on is their own idea (which may possibly result to an invention in the future) to help people's lives become. They chose one category from below and brainstormed different situations that are caused by the category of their choice.

A. Covid situation

B. Earthquake and/or Tsunami emergency

C. Problems about Garbage disposal (Trash)

D. New games that can be played during rainy days or indoors

From their brainstorm, they will come up with an idea that could possible solve one problem connected to the chosen category. Let us see how they will surprise us with their ideas in the coming days.

The Last Show and Tell

For our last day of Show and Tell, the students shared an object that they find interesting. They shared information about their favourite ...
