Halloween 2021

Halloween is one of the events that kids look forward to. They look forward to dressing up, getting treats and playing games.

It starts with decorating the door, shopping for costumes and packing treats, to playing games on the day itself, playing Halloween-themed activities, trick o'treating, and others.

Here is our Halloween preparation and celebration at DSKI.

Gravity - a mysterious force

Gravity is an invisible force that pulls objects toward each other, and because it is invisible, it is mysterious.

A couple of kids in the class wonder about the planets revolving around the sun and the moons revolving around planets. They are curious why revolution around a celestial body happen.

To address this, we started with getting an understanding of the force that is responsible for this - gravity.

The class did a simple experiment with magnets and paper clips. Through this, so far, they get a glimpse of that mysterious force that keeps the planets organised  in our solar system

Show and Tell

Our Grade 1s never run out of interesting things to share. 😊

This week, we again saw different objects shared by our Grade 1 learners. They explained what the items can do and answered our questions about them as well such as 'Where did you buy it?' ' Why do you like it?' 'How much is it?' and others.

Assessing prior knowledge

We started this week finding out what Grade 1s already know about space. We did it posting up statements about objects on space, and the learners wrote their names under YES column if they agree, NO column, if they do not agree and MAYBE column if they are not sure.

Some of the statements include:

- The sun is a star.

- Pluto is a planet.

- The coldest planet is Jupiter.

- There are 8 planets in the solar system.

- Others

Oktoberfest 2021

Who misses celebrating Oktoberfest? I know that a lot of us who have been in the school for at least 2 years miss celebrating this in a really festive (with no restrictions) way.

Despite the pandemic, our PTAs and teachers still manage to prepare a special way to celebrate it. Games, pretzels and candies were only a few things to name.

The Grade 1s enjoyed the games. The relay and toss a ring are some of them.

Happy Oktoberfest to everybody.❤️

How the world works

This week, we have started tuning in to the second unit, under the transdisciplinary theme, How the World Works.

Our central idea is "The Earth is surrounded by space and is part of a complex universe".

As part of our assessing prior understanding, the Grade 1s were given pictures of planets to cut out and paste. They also named the planets that they know.
